The Sculpture Podcast
Episode 7: Sokari Douglas Camp and Patsy Hickman
Welcome to the Morley Sculpture Department podcasts that include interviews, discussions and even sounds from the sculpture studio courses. These will be led by and include sculpture tutors, students, artists and contributors from the wider community.
In this episode Program Area Manager for Sculpture, Sheila Vollmer talks to local celebrated and internationally acclaimed sculptor Sokari Douglas Camp and sculptor/student Patsy Hickman about their sculptural work, inspirations and experiences with public sculpture around the 2nd ‘5th plinth Morley Waterloo entrance Sculpture competition’.
Morley College was thrilled that Sokari accepted the invitation to be the lead selector for this 2nd Waterloo Site entrance ‘5th plinth Sculpture competition’.
Patsy Hickman’s expressive strong design was selected and most fit the College’s theme of RENEWAL acknowledging the spirit of Morley College and in her words – ‘is a joyous celebration of the Morley community coming together to celebrate friendship and learning’.
Patsy Hickman’s RENEWAL Sculpture statement
A figurative sculpture with several thematically developing figures: the work tells a story: firstly, a despairing man, who awakes to the realisation of everything education, has to offer: music, dance, choir, academic disciplines and career opportunities, the arts, ceramics, sculpture. Book-wielding diverse characters demonstrate these disciplines. There is triumph and joy in what I hope is a theatrical and energised setting.
Importantly, here at Morley, you learn much, much more than your course subject: I hope that love of books, enthusiasm and joy of learning are explicit in my sculpture and that the work will be visited, will provoke curiosity and interest, and inspire every passer-by: Morley is indeed a University of the People.
