Series 3 Episode 1: Deesha Philyaw

The Prize for Unpublished Writers of Colour now accepts manuscripts in non-fiction.

In this third series of podcasts in support of Morley College’s Prize for Unpublished Writers of Colour, Dr Florence Marfo speaks to Deesha Philyaw, native Floridian and author of the critically acclaimed collection of short stories: The Secret Lives of Church Ladies. In 2021, it was announced that Secret Lives would be turned into a tv series.

This year marks the 100th birthday of Louise Meriwether, author of the classic novel Daddy Was a Number Runner (1970), which James Baldwin described as the first to ‘depict the urgent concerns of childhood from the point of view of a black girl in the USA’. In homage to Meriwether, Florence discusses her work and legacy with Deesha, who has described the novel as one that she has re-read countless times.
