In this episode, Melissa Baksh speaks to Kate Cheka. Kate is an artist and performer trying to make people laugh (comedy), think (philosophical musings) or feel (writing). She has performed stand-up in over eight countries across four continents, accolades include the 2023 Funny Women Awards winner, BBC New Comedy Awards 2022 semi-finalist, Berlin New Stand-up Award Finalist 2019. Her debut (unpublished!) novel was shortlisted for the Penguin WriteNow Prize 2020, the Deborah Rogers Foundation 2021, the Mo Siewcharren Prize 2022 and won the Morley Prize for Unpublished Writers of Colour 2021. Her work explores postcolonialism, feminism and the foreign/alterior space. Kate wrote the accompanying essay for the ’embodied’ exhibition at Morley Gallery.
