Pilar Fernandez, originally from Mexico City, has lived in London since 1978. After more than twenty years away from Music, exploring different avenues, Pilar did an MA on Photography at the London College of Printing. She graduated in Journalism and did Social documentary exhibitions for a few years. Then she did a BSc Ayurvedic Medicine at TVU University and after that one year in India as intern at different hospitals in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. After returning to London Pilar worked as a practitioner of Ayurvedic Medicine at various clinics in Central London for a few years. She joined Morley College and started playing piano again in Martino Tirimo’s and Gwenneth Pryor’s classes. Currently she works with Nikos Stavlas at his Advanced Piano class.
Kate Harrison learnt piano in Nottingham in the days when music was an educational priority and free instrumental teaching was available to all. A Saturday morning music school and county youth orchestra supported a thriving community of young musicians, many of whom (not Kate) went on to a career in music. Kate’s work as a lawyer and a parent meant for years music took a back seat, but in 2015 she became a member of the London Symphony Chorus, in 2016 took up the piano again and in 2019 joined chamber music and piano classes at Morley, where she is delighted to find another thriving musical community.
David Evans retired from a career as a hand surgeon in 2013, allowing him time to develop a lifelong interest in the piano. He studied the piano at Clifton College with Douglas Fox in the ‘50s, and has been a regular participant in musical courses, including Dartington in the ‘60s, Lotmusic, a piano workshop in the Lot valley in France, and the Headington Chamber Music course. He joined the Advanced Performers’ course at Morley College with Gwenneth Pryor in 2013, and has continued with Nikos Stavlas taking the class. He also attended the class on Chamber Music and Piano Accompaniment run by Kate Ryder.
Andrew Hicklenton studied piano from a young age and through school. For several years in the 1980s, he attended jazz classes and workshops at Goldsmiths’ College, then recommenced classical piano lessons in 1996, gaining his DipABRSM in performance in 2000. At Morley College, he has attended the Piano Masterclass with Martino Tirimo since 2006, and has been with the Advanced Performers class under Nikos Stavlas since 2021. Professionally, after graduating as an electronic engineer then pursuing a career in technical journalism, Andrew trained as a teacher of physics and taught at schools in London for more than 25 years, retiring in 2020.
